UCCP Bradford Proudly Presents: “Huni sa Grasya ug Gugma" – A Call to Restore Concert for a Cause, for the restoration of UCCP Bradford Main Sanctuary.

This Concert for a Cause will happen on February 24, 2024; 6:00 pm at the Mahogany Hall, IEC Convention Center (IC3), Cebu City. This is a very special concert since we will be graced by no other than Mr. Sal Malaki, A renowned tenor of the Los Angeles Opera and the Los Angeles Master Chorale but is a Filipino and a Cebuano by heart.

Other performers will also come during the event who will also offer their talents not just for this very cause but more importantly to honor our God through their God’s gift of music and voices. 

IN RETROSPECT

In 1902, the United States Presbyterian Church started its foreign mission in Cebu City. The mission gradually grew and in 1912 began the construction of a church in Jones Ave. (now Osmeña Boulevard). It was dedicated in October 26, 1913 and is now considered as one of the oldest functioning protestant churches in the Philippines. In 1969, a bigger church (which we now call as the Main Sanctuary) was constructed and was dedicated in 1970. In 2012, minor renovations were done to avert damages brought by natural elements throughout the years.

THE CHALLENGE

For fifty-three years and counting, the UCCP Bradford Main Sanctuary withstood the test of time and became a bastion of Protestantism in Central Visayas. In 2021, the Christian Young Adults Fellowship (CYAF) spearheaded the Main Sanctuary Repainting Project to remove the wall stains brought by heavy downpour. Soon enough, it was discovered that the church roof and ceiling are in a state of alarming decay as leaks and stains continued to increase after the repainting. In 2022, after thorough evaluation, the Building Committee spearheaded by the United Church Men (UCM), recommended a general repair of the church roof and ceiling. Later on, wing expansions; a mezzanine; interior improvements; and equipment enhancements were proposed to maximize the Main Sanctuary Repair and Development Project which will cost more than 20 million pesos.

THE CONCERT

The challenge at hand might be insurmountable, but we always believe that when we work together for the greater glory of our Almighty God, we can always say with conviction that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13) and above all we know that nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37). Therefore, with this faith in our hearts, God has empowered us and led us to this Concert for a Cause entitled, “Huni sa Grasya ug Gugma – A Call to Restore.” This Concert for a Cause will happen on February 24, 2024; 6:00 pm at the IEC Convention Center Cebu. THE TENOR

Filipino-American tenor Sal Malaki is one of Los Angeles Opera’s most seasoned artist, having appeared in over 90 operas with distinguished roles in La Traviata, Madama Butterfly among others. He is also a celebrated artist of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) appearing as Rodolfo in La Boheme, Tamino in The Magic Flute and Lt. Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly.

He is also an esteemed member and soloist of the Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC). Sal is a popular voice recitalist who occasionally plays the flute but on one notable occasion, he forgot his flute and thus was born the legendary ruby whistle in the Philippines Madrigal Singers’ popular L’Important C’est La Rose.
